District outlines deadlines for 2016-2017 Choice process

Submit application by January 29th deadline for priority consideration

All students in Five Star Schools are assigned to attend a specific school based upon the geographical attendance area of their residence. However, parents/guardians have other options based on a state law requiring open enrollment in all Colorado school districts when there is space available. If students wish to attend another school, they can apply through the district's Schools of Choice Program, apply for a Family-Initiated Transfer (in-district students only) or apply for a schools extended day kindergarten program directly with the school.

Admissions to all schools for non-boundary students are managed by the Choice or Transfer processes (except for extended day kindergarten programs at neighborhood schools and the middle & high school programs that are not school-wide like Horizon SOAR, Legacy 2000, Mountain Range Global Studies, Northglenn STEM and Thornton IB Diploma Program). In-district students interested in attending high school programs that are not school-wide should apply directly with the program. Out-of-district students wishing to attend high school programs that are not school-wide must apply for both Choice and with the program. If the school is not open to Choice then the program is closed to out-of-district students.

The Choice status becomes null and void when a student withdraws from their Choice school.  When this occurs, the student must return to their boundary school if they return to the district at a later time.

There are 4 kindergarten options in Adams 12.  Admissions are managed by the Choice program for three programs (extended day magnet kindergartens, half-day kindergartens and full-day Title I kindergartens).  Admissions for tuition-based extended day kindergarten programs at neighborhood schools are managed directly by schools.  Please refer to this webpage for more information:

There are three Choice windows:

  • Priority consideration window aka First Round from December 1st to January 29th (for the next school year)

  • Second round from February 1st to March 31st (for the next school year)

  • Third round from early August up to late September (for the current school year)

Families wishing to enroll in Adams 12 Five Star Schools for the next school year should apply for priority consideration during the first round of Choice. There is a second and third round for schools that have space available after the first round has closed.

Applications for round 1 & 2 are accepted via the district's online Choice application or via paper applications available at schools or the Educational Support Center. All applications received by the deadline are included in a lottery for available spaces (the process is not first-come, first served). Families are notified via US mail no later than the 3rd week of February for the first round, and the 3rd week of April for the second round.

Families interested in enrolling for the current school year can apply for schools open in the 3rd round of Choice up to mid September. Third round Choice applications are accepted at schools directly. The third round is on a first-come, first-served basis. Once a school is full they no longer accept applications, but can refer families to other schools that are still open.
